Of the original 492 Amfleet cars, approximately 440 were still in service as of early 2012. Under the Capstone Program, many were refurbished in the late 1990s and early 2000s at the Bear Shops. Electrical and mechanical systems were overhauled, wheels and running gear renewed, and flooring, walls and seats upgraded. Amfleet I cafe in Dexter, Michigan Amfleet is a series of intercity railroad passenger cars built for the operator Amtrak by the manufacturer Budd Company in two series during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Today, Amfleet cars are used extensively throughout the Amtrak system outside the western United States. Amfleet I: During its beginnings, Amtrak inherited its passenger cars from other railroads. Old, steam heated and in dire need of upgrades, Amtrak set out to replace these cars in 1973 with the purchase of the first Amfleet cars from Budd. Amfleet is a fleet of single-level intercity railroad passenger cars built by the Budd Company for American company Amtrak in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Budd based the Amfleet design on its earlier Metroliner electric multiple unit.

The 2019 Bachmann Amfleet has been heralded as the most authentic version yet, featuring new components and details never seen on previous examples. Most notably, this is the first release to accurately replicate the current paint scheme and configuration of cars used on the Northeast Corridor.

Amfleet Ii Cars

During its beginnings, Amtrak inherited its passenger cars from other railroads. Old, steam heated and in dire need of upgrades, Amtrak set out to replace these cars in 1973 with the purchase of the first Amfleet cars from Budd. This initial batch of 492 cars were the Amfleet I - with a door and vestibule on either end (unlike their single-doored successor), these cars fell into a few different varieties but essentially broke down into coach and dinette variants. Despite the introduction of their newer cousins, Amfleet I's are still in use by Amtrak, primarily for shorter distance routes.
